Spring Sports Weekend Round-Up 5/8/23

Clay Target Team

(Left to Right- Graham Gill, Matt Lachajewski, Joe Olejniczak, Curtis Yaek, Booby Algar)

They took part of our team up to Lansing for the SE Conference Championships this Saturday.  It was primarily an orientation experience for our young shooters who have never seen the ranges or the throngs of young marksmen who gather there.  It prepared us well for the state championships in June.

Here are the athletes that participated:

  • Matt Lachejewski, '22: Our first DLS-sponsored collegian to represent the Pilots in the 17-year history of our sport.  Last year's team captain and this year's collegian captain, Matt's high round was 23/25.

  • Bobby Algar, '23: Team Captain and veteran marksman.  Bobby's high round was 23/25.

  • Graham Gill, '24: Another veteran marksman and dedicated multi-sport athlete.  Graham tied Joey for top overall score (84/100).  His high round was 24/25.

  • Joe Olejniczak, '24: Rapidly improving veteran athlete who experienced his first registered competition.  Joey tied for top gun scoring 84/100 with a high round of 24/25.

  • Curtis Yaek, '26: Our youngest athlete and very talented.  A registered contest first-timer, Curtis had a top round of 20/25.

  • Anthony Cooper, '25: New to the team, this multi-sport athlete was an immediate hit with his ability.  Anthony was only 1 shot behind Joey and Graham with an overall score of 83/100.  His top round was 22/25.  And he was our top first-year shooter.

  • Nathan Vallelunga, 25: Another recent addition who has made rapid advancements in his performance.  Nathan's top round was 20/25.

  • Anthony Raffin, '25: Relative newcomer who has taken to our sport like a veteran.  Anthony's top round was 21/25.

  • Note: scoring 25/25 is a significant milestone in a marksman's career.  Many of our students are getting very close to accomplishing this feat - somewhat like a hole in one in golf.

  • Note #2:  Our clay target team is coached by Mike Jolly, former A.D. and multi-sport DLS coach, Sam Tews, DLS '07, and Dave and Sue Girard.  Sam, Dave, and Sue are superior shooters (100-straight club).

Track and Field

The Pilots finished 13th out of 41 teams competing at the Farmington Invitational on Saturday. There were 16 athletes that set PR's during the meet. Medals were won by James Wallace in the 100m (3rd), Ryan Ross in the Shot Put (6th), 4x200-7th (Dalton Drogosh, Damion King, Aaron White, Walker Neff), and 4x100-2nd (Dalton Drogosh, James Wallace, Aaron White, Micah Walker).

Lacrosse

Our Varsity lost on Friday to Traverse City United 16-9. and also on Saturday to Petoskey 16-9. Next, they play at Detroit Country Day on Thursday at 7:00.  The Pilots have a few days off and then will face off against Country Day this Thursday at 7:00 PM.

Varsity Baseball

Varsity baseball struggled at the plate this past weekend as they lost 3-0 and 6-1 in a double-header vs Catholic Central.  They look to turn things around today as they have another double-header this time against University Liggett School.

Good luck, Pilots!
