Pilots Kick Off State Playoffs with Victory, Blank Detroit U-D Jesuit, 44-0

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Three games against the Detroit U-D Jesuit Cubs, and three victories for the Pilots (9-0), which defeated the Cubs, 44-0, Friday night in their MHSAA state playoff opener.

De La Salle's margin of victory in the three contests: 137-21.

On a rain-soaked night at Wayne State's Tom Adams Field, senior DeNiro Johnson and sophomore Rhett Roeser led the way for the Purple and Gold with two touchdowns each.

Roeser got the scoring started for the Pilots, after recovering a U-D Jesuit fumble on the opening kickoff. He followed it up with a 4-yard TD run at the 11:11 mark in the first quarter.

On the ensuing Cubs possession, junior Payton Babich intercepted a Nathan Brown pass, and took it 18 yards to the end zone. It gave the Pilots a 14-0 lead with 10:07 to play in the opening quarter.

Roeser struck again, following a U-D Jesuit safety. On the subsequent kickoff (which the Cubs had opted for instead of a punt), Roeser received the kick, and proceeded to take it 70 yards to the house.

It was 23-0 before the Cubs could even catch their collective breaths.

De La Salle wasn't done scoring in the quarter, either. It got on the scoreboard once more, via a 22-yard TD run by Johnson.

The Pilots' 30-0 first-quarter advantage was extended to 37-0 when junior Brady Drogosh recorded a 7-yard TD run with 9:01 remaining in the first half.

The Purple and Gold's final score on the night came on Johnson's second score of the game. It was also the contest's longest score from scrimmage, as Johnson took a carry 64 yards for the touchdown.

It gave the Pilots a 44-0 advantage with 1:03 to go in the half.

The score remained that way for the remainder of the contest, as the Purple and Gold produced a dominant performance on both sides of the ball.

In fact, De La Salle's defense -- led by defensive coordinator Brandon Bush -- was so stout that it kept the Cubs from recording a first down until the 2:30 mark in the third quarter.

"I am glad we came out focused and didn't make a lot mistakes," DLS head coach Dan Rohn said after the game. "We took care of the ball in the bad weather, and took advantage of their mistakes."

Next up for the Pilots is a Division 2 district championship matchup with Grosse Pointe South (6-4). Kickoff is set for Friday at 7 p.m. at Hazel Park High School.
