De La Salle Collegiate Athletics Roundup - Weekend of 3/4/22

Basketball

Varsity 

Detroit Renaissance 64, De La Salle Collegiate 61: Junior Mike Sulaka posted a team-high 16 points in the 2021-22 regular season finale for the Pilots (13-7). Additionally, senior Tamario Adley had 12 points and five rebounds, while freshman Phoenix Glassnor and senior Caleb Reese each contributed 10 points.

Next up for the Purple and Gold is the start of the MHSAA state playoffs. De La Salle will play the winner of Warren Mott-Warren Woods Tower in a district semifinal matchup Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Troy High School.

 

Hockey

De La Salle 7, Riverview Gabriel Richard 2: Sophomore Keegan James recorded a hat trick, and junior Benjamin Vanderdonck stopped 32-of-34 shots he faced in the quarterfinal playoff victory for the Pilots (23-4-1).  

Additionally, seniors Seaton Heilman, Jacob Lawrence, Jax VanIttersum and Robert Vanderdonck each contributed a goal. Meanwhile, seniors James Sigmon and Jack Rivera both posted two assists, and senior Branden Stabnick and sophomore Colton Fuqua had an assist each.    

Next up for the Purple and Gold is an MHSAA Division 3 semifinal matchup with Orchard Lake St. Mary's Friday. Puck is set to drop at 11 a.m. at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.

 

Swimming

De La Salle finished sixth out of seven teams in the 2022 Catholic League swimming finals. 

Meanwhile, the individual results for the Pilots were as follows:

- Senior Max Swiatkowski finished first in the 200-yard individual medley. Additionally, he was named All-Catholic in both the 200 IM and 100-yard backstroke.  

- The relay team of Swiatkowski, senior Michael Paluch, junior Michael Saad and junior Michael Slusser (senior Lukas Pietsch swam in place of Slusser in CHSL finals) qualified for the state meet in the 200-yard medley relay.

- Paluch also qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Next up for the Purple and Gold is the MHSAA Division 2 state meet next weekend at Oakland University (March 11-12). 

 

Wrestling 

Junior Nathan O'Donnell (152-pound weight class), sophomore Eddie Hanshaw (160-pound class) and junior Vinny Lertola (189-pound class) each competed in the MHSAA Division 1 state finals at Ford Field. Each of them proceeded to go winless in their matches, however.

O'Donnell and Lertola each finished the season with at least 40 wins, with O’Donnell posting a 40-10 record and Lertola going 44-7. Meanwhile, Hanshaw finished the season with a 28-20 mark.
