De La Salle Collegiate Athletics Roundup - Weekend of 2/18/22

Basketball

Varsity 

De La Salle Collegiate 68, Detroit Loyola 44: Junior Nino Smith led all Pilots scorers with 22 points in the quarterfinal round of the Catholic High School League Bishop Division Championship. He also added four assists and five steals. ⁣

Additionally, senior Caleb Reese contributed 12 points, four assists and five steals, while junior Michael Sulaka poured in nine points. 

Next up for the Purple and Gold (12-5) is a contest with Detroit Catholic Central in the semifinal round of the CHSL Bishop Division Championship. Game will take place Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center.
 

Bowling

Our Pilots varsity bowlers finished in second place in the Catholic League Bishop Division Championships Saturday.

To start the day, the Pilots qualified third after three regular games, and faced off against the No. 2 seed Divine Child Falcons in the semifinals. De La Salle proceeded to dispatch of the Falcons in two straight games, 188-144 and 186-184.

Then, in the finals, the Pilots faced off against Detroit U-D Jesuit. The first game was close heading into the 10th frame, but U-D Jesuit ultimately prevailed, 194-182. In game two, the Cubs beat the Pilots, 204-139.

Additionally, junior Drew Gohlke and senior Corey Wojcik received All-Catholic honors, senior Gage Battle received All-Academic recognition and senior Matthew Lachajewski received All-League honors. 

Next up for the Purple and Gold is MHSAA state regional competition, which kicks off Friday at 1 p.m. at 5 Star Lanes in Sterling Heights. It will continue into Saturday, when play resumes at 8 a.m. 
 

Wrestling 

On Saturday, our varsity wrestling program advanced three wrestlers to the MHSAA Division 1 individual state finals, which are taking place Friday, March 4th - Saturday, March 5th, at Ford Field. 

The De La Salle state final qualifiers are as follows: 

Junior Nathan O'Donnell - 152-pound weight class

Sophomore Eddie Hanshaw - 160-pound class

Junior Vinny Lertola - 189-pound class

Also, varsity assistant coach Austin Seelbach was named the Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by the Michigan Wrestling Association. 
 

REMINDER

De La Salle’s freshman and junior varsity basketball teams will be competing for Catholic League postseason championships Monday afternoon at the Bill Fox Gymnasium. 

The freshman squad will do battle with Catholic Central at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the JV squad will square off with Brother Rice at 5:30 p.m.
