Super Bowl Weekend Athletics Roundup

Basketball

Varsity

Birmingham Brother Rice 67, De La Salle Collegiate 53: Junior Nino Smith scored 16 points, while senior Tamario Adley had 15.

Next up for the Purple and Gold (11-5, 3-5 Catholic League Central Division) is the Catholic League Bishop Championship. De La Salle will square off with Detroit Loyola in the quarterfinal round Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Marian High School. 

Junior varsity 

Brother Rice 65, De La Salle 51: Freshman Armoni Portis scored a team-leading 14 points, while sophomore Dylan Trondle finished with 13 points.  

Next up for the Catholic League Central Division co-champion Pilots (13-2, 6-2 Central Division) is the first round of the Catholic League playoffs. It will see De La Salle square off with Detroit U-D Jesuit Monday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Brother Rice High School.  

Freshman 

De La Salle 58, Brother Rice 49: Mason Stempin led the way for the Pilots (14-2, 6-2 Catholic League Central Division) with 14 points, while Tony Landa won the team’s hardhat for his hustle on both ends of the floor. With the victory, the Purple and Gold clinched a share of the regular season league title. 

Next up for De La Salle is the opening round of the Catholic League playoffs. It will see the Pilots take on Brother Rice Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Bill Fox Gymnasium. 

 

Bowling 

Our varsity bowlers (8-2) finished in 17th place in the Dakota Cougar Classic Saturday, missing out on placing in the top 16 by 27 pins.

Next up for the Pilots is a singles event Tuesday. It’s slated to kick off at 3:30 p.m. at Oak Lanes. 

 

Hockey 

Game #1

De La Salle 6, Port Huron Northern 0: Senior Branden Stabnick produced a goal and three assists, while junior Brady DesMadryl added a goal and two assists.

Additionally, seniors Robert Vanderdonck and Seaton Heilman each contributed a goal and an assist.

Game #2

De La Salle 5, Grosse Pointe North 0: Seniors Seaton Heilman, Jacob Lawrence and Jax VanIttersum each had a goal, while junior Brady DesMadryl finished with two goals in the Senior Night victory for the Pilots (19-4-1). 

Next up for the Purple and Gold is a contest with Catholic Central Wednesday. Puck is set to drop at 7:30 p.m. at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.

 

Wrestling 

At individual districts Sunday at Birmingham Groves High School, seven De La Salle wrestlers advanced to the MHSAA regional round. 

112 pounds - Freshman Maxx Krug (3rd place)

140 pounds - Sophomore Joey Montilla (2nd place) 

152 pounds - Junior Nathan O’Donnell (1st place)

160 pounds - Sophomore Eddie Hanshaw (2nd place) 

189 pounds - Junior Vinny Lertola (1st place)

189 pounds - Junior Cody Beleshi (2nd place)

215 pounds - Junior Casey Beleshi (2nd place) 

The Pilots entered 14 wrestlers in district play, and walked out with seven advancing to the MHSAA Division 1 regional. The regional meet is set to take place Saturday at Hartland HS.

 

In Other News

After making its long-awaited return in 2021, the De La Salle Collegiate Athletic Hall of Fame will induct another class in 2022. 

Four individuals and a championship-winning team from the school are set to be enshrined as part of the 2022 class, which will be the seventh in school history. The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 17, at 5 p.m., on the campus of De La Salle. 

The Hall of Fame weekend will kick off with an all-school Mass Friday, September 16, and be followed by a varsity football game against Birmingham Brother Rice in the evening (7 p.m. start), at Tom Adams Field on the campus of Wayne State University.

Nominations for individuals and teams are now being accepted by the DLS Athletic Department. To submit an individual or team to the nominating committee, please fill out this form by no later than May 1, 2022.
